The Angel Performance

The angel display at the Augsburg Christmas market is well known and unique. 23 angels appear on the beautiful backdrop of the town hall and transform it into a giant Advent calendar. The Augsburg Angels’ Play takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 18:00. On December 23, the angels will perform at 6:00 pm and then climb down the stairs to the portal in front of the town hall.

A little look behind the scenes: The angels are young women from Augsburg who have been specially selected for this task. In addition to a lovely facial expression, graceful movement, musicality and, of course, a head for heights are required. The Engelesspiel was invented by the former tourism director in Augsburg, Fritz Kleiber, in 1977. He was inspired by a painting by Hans Holbein.

You can find some videos of the Augsburg angel play on YouTube, but these can only partially convey the wonderful atmosphere of the performance. No visitor to the Augsburg Christmas Market should miss a live performance by the Augsburg Angels!
